Heat of Solution of Lithium Chloride

Materials

600 mL Beaker

Big Lecture Room Meter with Temperature Probe

Bottle of Lithium Chloride (premeasured at 60 grams)

      

Procedure

  1. Add about 200ml water to a 600ml beaker. Add about 60gm LiCl. Temperature increases to about 60oC.
  2. Immerse the probe from the lecture size temperature meter to show class the temperature increase.
       

Reactions

LiCl (s) + H2O (l) --> Li+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)

 dHsoln = -37 kJ/mole = -875 J/gm

        

Waste Management

The Lithium chloride solution should be sent to EH&S as hazardous waste (Toxic).
