Application Process

Application Materials Required:

  • Current curriculum vitae or resume.
  • A personal statement describing the following (2 page limit):
    • research experiences
    • teaching and mentoring experiences
    • career goals
  • A one-page statement describing your contributions to diversity, namely:
    • What significant and unusual educational, social, cultural, economic, or other barriers have you overcome in pursuit of your education? Describe, in sufficient detail, the challenge as well as any unique insights, perspectives or skills you gained while overcoming this challenge.
    • Describe how overcoming the aforementioned challenge will enable you to contribute to the campus community in a unique and positive manner that enhances campus diversity.
    • Note that this statement is a component of the San Diego Fellowship Program. (More info.)
  • A brief written statement from your Faculty Research Advisor must be submitted indicating that you have made satisfactory progress in your research project(s), and that he/she supports your participation in the GAANN program if you are selected as a Fellow. (The advisor statement is not applicable to Incoming and First Year students in rotation.) Advisors should email these statements to Asmaa Khatib (akhatib@ucsd.edu).
  • Complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA: (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/)
    • In your submission, you must list UCSD (Title IV Code: 001317). To expedite the processing of your GAANN application, please forward your FAFSA confirmation email to Asmaa Khatib (akhatib@ucsd.edu) which indicates your "EFC". (Note: Acceptance of subsidized loans and other fellowships will reduce the financial need and possible eligibility for GAANN. Teaching or research assistantships may be coupled with a GAANN fellowship.)
  • Students may be able to demonstrate an increased financial need through completion of relevant "Budget Add-On" forms with the UCSD Financial Aid Office in the categories below:
    • Books, Supplies, and Tutorial Costs
    • Special Books, Supplies, and Equipment
    • Child-Care
    • Computer
    • Medical/Dental/Optical Insurance
    • Rent and Utilities
    • Transportation

The best suited candidates will be selected without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, or disabling condition. This appointment procedure conforms to the nondiscrimination statement of UC San Diego.

Successful 2017-18 applicants will be notified in Summer 2017. A program orientation and luncheon will be scheduled for all Fellows, Affiliates, and Advisors.
