Vicki Grassian elected Chair of Chemistry Section of the AAAS
Vicki Grassian has been elected Chair-Elect of the Chemistry Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She begins her term as Chair Elect on February 20th 2018 following the AAAS annual meeting. This position begins a three year chair line succession of Chair-Elect, Chair, and Retiring Chair. Daniela Rhodes to Give DeLuca Lecture at UC San Diego
Nanyang Technological University Professor Daniela Rhodes will deliver the Marlene A. DeLuca Lecture at the University of California San Diego on Thursday, February 22. In her lecture, entitled “G-quadruplexes: the Cinderella of Nucleic Acid Structures”, Rhodes will summarize recent evidence for the in vivo presence and function of DNA and RNA G-quadruplexes in various cellular pathways including DNA replication, gene expression and telomere maintenance. The lecture begins at 4:00 p.m. in the Leichtag Family Foundation Biomedical Research Building Auditorium (Room 107). The lecture is free and open to the public. Electrons in the water
In an article published in Nature Communications, the Paesani group, in collaboration with the Galli group at the University of Chicago, provides answers to a decades-long question: What happens in the short time period following the injection of an electron into water? This study was made possible by combining the MB-pol many-body potential energy function developed by the Paesani group, which exhibits unprecedented accuracy in predicting the behavior of water across different phases, with highly accurate theoretical methods developed by the Galli group to study excited states of matter. The results demonstrate that the binding energy of an electron with water is much smaller than previously thought, and varies significantly depending on whether the electron is located at the surface or in the bulk. These findings have important consequences both at the fundamental and application levels, providing new insights into the properties of water that are key to understanding reduction/oxidation reactions in aqueous solutions, which are widespread in chemistry, biology, and materials research. Nobel Prize Winner Joachim Frank to Give Kamen Lecture at UC San Diego
Columbia University Professor Joachim Frank, winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, will deliver the Martin D. Kamen Lecture at the University of California San Diego on Thursday, January 25. In his lecture, entitled “Single-Particle Cryo-EM: The Sky is the Limit”, Frank will discuss the history and scientific community’s accomplishments, and provide a look into the future, for single-particle cryo-electron microscopy. The lecture begins at 4:00 p.m. in the Health Sciences Education Center Auditorium in the Skaggs Pharmaceutical Sciences Building. The lecture is free and open to the public.
