Professor Julia Ortony Joins the Faculty
Prof. Ortony earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from U.C. Santa Barbara in 2011.
Prof. Ortony’s research focuses on the design of small molecule nanostructures, and the
characterization of their conformational and water dynamics. Ortony’s research combines both
nanomaterials design and development of dynamics characterization methodologies.
Prior to UC San Diego Prof. Ortony was the Samuel A. Goldblith Associate Professor in the
Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. Ortony’s work on nanostructure design for
water purification earned her a Bose Fellowship. Ortony is also a recipient of the National Science
Foundation CAREER Award. Over the past several years, Ortony has been heavily involved in EDI
efforts, especially with respect to gender inclusion in STEM.
