Distinguished Professor Susan Taylor elevated to AAAS Fellow
Distinguished Professor and HHMI Investigator Susan S. Taylor is among the 486 members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to be awarded the distinction of Fellow this year. She was chosen for her outstanding contributions to the field of enzyme biochemistry, particularly for elucidation of the structure, function and evolution of protein kinase. New Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold or blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on Saturday, 14 February, at the AAAS Fellows Forum during the 2009 AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Distinguished Professor Edward Dennis receives Yale Medal and Honorary Doctorate Degree, Goethe Univ
Yale Alumnus Edward A. Dennis was awarded the Yale Medal on November 14. It is the highest award presented by Yale University to recognize and honor outstanding individual service to the university. Distinguished Professor Dennis currently serves on the University Council, and served on the Development and Alumni Affairs committee of the Yale Corporation and as Chair of the Association of Yale Alumni. Professor Dennis was recently awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine degree "Doctor Medicinae honoris causa" from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main during Academic Day ceremonies on November 25th in recognition of his outstanding research on lipid biochemistry.

Pieter Dorrestein to receive Eli Lilly Young Investigator Award in Analytical Chemistry
Dr. Pieter Dorrestein has been chosen by the Lilly Grant Office of Eli Lilly and Company to receive an ACACC Young Investigator Award. The unsolicited award is given to support young investigators early in their careers.

Dreyfus New Faculty Award for Professor Nathan Gianneschi
Professor Nathan C. Gianneschi has been selected by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation to receive a 2008 New Faculty Award. The award provides an unrestricted research grant of $50,000 that is generally made before new faculty members formally begin their first tenure-track appointment. Recommendations for awards are based on evidence that the nominee has the potential to produce an independent body of scientific scholarship of outstanding quality and will make significant contributions to overall education in the chemical sciences. Nominations are reviewed by distinguished faculty in the field of chemistry.

John M. Newsam joins our inorganic chemistry division as an adjunct professor in the fall of 2008. He is President and Managing Director of fqubed, Inc. Dr. Newsam received his D.Phil in chemistry from Oxford University in 1980.

Professor Jerry Yang receives 2008 Alzheimer's Association New Investigator Award
Prof. Jerry Yang has been selected by the Alzheimer's Association to receive a 2008 New Investigator Award. The award provides $100,000 to support the early career development of young investigators who are no more than 10 years past their doctoral degree. Prof. Yang's award will be used to explore methods to chemically degrade aggregated A² peptides, which play a major role in Alzheimer's Disease.

Stacey Brydges joins our chemical education division in the fall of 2008. She is currently a Lecturer and Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University. Dr. Brydges earned her Ph.D. in Physical and Organometallic Chemistry in 2003 from McMaster University.

Michael Galperin joins our physical chemistry division in the fall of 2008. He is currently Director's Postdoctoral Fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Galperin earned his Ph.D. in chemical physics with distinction in 2003 from Tel Aviv University.

Professor Anthony D. J. Haymet joined our physical chemistry division in the winter of 2008. In addition to appointment as Professor in the Graduate Department of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, he holds administrative appointments as Vice Chancellor, Marine Sciences, Dean of the Graduate School of Marine Sciences, and Director, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The Committee on Distinguished Teaching has selected Robert Radford as a recipient of the 2008 Barbara J. and Paul D. Saltman Excellent Teaching Award. Radford is a graduate student studying with Professor F. Akif Tezcan.

The Committee on Distinguished Teaching has selected Dr. Haim Weizman as the recipient of a 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Weizman is a Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment teaching organic chemistry in our department.

Nathan Gianneschi joins our organic chemistry division in the fall of 2008. He is currently a Dow Chemical Company Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow (American Australian Association) at The Scripps Research Institute. Dr. Gianneschi earned his Ph.D. in chemistry in 2005 from Northwestern University.

Beckman Young Investigator Awards for F. Akif Tezcan and Pieter Dorrestein
Assistant Professors F. Akif Tezcan and Pieter Dorrestein were each awarded an Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation Young Investigator Award for 2008. The award is intended to provide research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. This prestigious award brings with it $300,000 of unrestricted research funding.

Marjorie Hardy wins 2008 Betsy Faught Award
Marjorie Hardy, Business Officer of the department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, has been named the recipient of the 2008 Betsy Faught Award. The Award recognizes excellence and outstanding achievement in the management of General Campus academic units, and honors the memory of Betsy Faught, an exceptional department manager who adeptly and skillfully managed an academic program at UCSD for more than twenty years. The award recipient is selected by a group of peers based on nominations from within the Academic Affairs units. Marjorie will be honored at a special ABA recognition ceremony this spring.
