Congratulations to Dr. Edward Dennis on receiving the Vallee Award!
The Bert and Natalie Vallee Award in Biomedical Science was established by the Bert and N. Kuggie Vallee Foundation in 2012 to recognize international achievements in the sciences basic to medicine. It is awarded to an established scientist for outstanding accomplishments in basic biomedical research. Nominations must originate from ASBMB members, however the nominee need not be an ASBMB member.

Congratulations to Robina Shaheen on being selected to serve on the Mars 2020 planning committee!
Project scientist, Robina Shaheen, of Thiemens laboratory, was selected to serve on the Mars 2020 planning committee (joint NASA-ESA mission) on sample acquisition from Mars. She worked on the atmospheric chemistry and biogeochemistry sections along with other team members.

Congratulations to Terra Sztain-Pedone on receiving the 2018-19 Bruno Zimm Award!
The Bruno Zimm Graduate Award is named for UC San Diego Professor of Chemistry Bruno Zimm, a pioneer in the study of the biophysical properties of nucleic acids and proteins. The award is given to a full-time Ph.D. graduate student whose research is in the area of physical chemistry, planetary chemistry, or cosmo-chemistry, and whose research is exceptionally meritorious and particularly deserving of recognition. The award is made possible through a gift from Larry S. Millstein, Ph.D. (Chemistry, ’87), and his wife Robin Taylor. Professor Zimm was an adviser to and chaired Dr. Millstein’s doctoral committee.

Congratulations to Erik Romero on receiving the 2019 Chancellor's Dissertation Medal!
The Graduate Student Association (GSA), in coordination with the Graduate Division and the Office of Research Affairs, is seeking outstanding graduate students who have recently completed their thesis work at UC San Diego. Each department is eligible to nominate one student who has completed an outstanding dissertation in the past year. A committee of faculty assembled by the dean of each division will select a winner from each division at UC San Diego. Award winners will have the opportunity to be honored at commencement, when they receive their medals at the time of being hooded. Winners will also be recognized as a recipient of the medal on the Graduate Division webpage.

Professor Rommie Amaro awarded new Endowed Chair Position
Professor Rommie Amaro awarded new Endowed Chair: the Distinguished Professorship in Theoretical and computational Chemistry. Professor Amaro’s computational and theoretical research work has significantly advanced our understanding of ligand protein interactions including how drugs bind at the catalytic and various allosteric sites of enzymes. Professor Amaro is PI on several grants and leads two large and important NIH funded centers at UC San Diego, namely the National Biomedical Computational Resource and the Drug Design Data Resource. As such, she has a very visible leadership role locally, nationally, and globally in the computational and theoretical fields. Prof. Amaro contributes significantly to the undergraduate teaching program in our department and is an enthusiastic and active participant in Departmental affairs serving as Vice-Chair of the Department and as the elected Chair of the Section on Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Congratulations to Professor Neal Devaraj on receiving the 2019 Guggenheim Fellowship!
Since its establishment in 1925, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has granted more than $360 million in Fellowships to over 18,000 individuals, among whom are scores of Nobel laureates, Fields Medalists, poets laureate, members oft eh various national academies, and winners of the Pulitzer Prize, Turing Award, National Book Award, and other significant, internationally recognized honors. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants in the Foundation's ninety-fifth competition.

Congratulations to Distinguished Professor Vicki Grassian on being awarded the Nichols Medal!
Distinguished Professor Vicki Grassian has been awarded the Nichols Medal by the New York Section of the American Chemical Society. The Nichols Medal is awarded annually for "significant and original contributions in any field of chemistry." The award was established in 1902 by the New York Section of the American Chemical Society through a gift from chemist and businessman William H. Nichols. It was the first award authorized by the American Chemical Society.

Distinguished Professor Kim Prather elected to National Academy of Engineering
The National Academy of Engineering has elected a number of new members, including UCSD Distinguished Professor Kim Prather. This is among one of the highest professional distinctions that can be accorded to an Engineer. Membership honors those people who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature," and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education." Newly elected members will be inducted during a ceremony at the NAE's annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on October 6, 2019.

Congratulations to Professor Vicki Grassian, IUPAC 2019 Distinguished Women in Chemistry Awardee
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) recently announced the awardees of the 2019 Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering and UCSD Professor Vicki Grassian was one of those honored. The program was created to promote and acknowledge the work of women chemists/chemical engineers worldwide and each awardee elected this year was chosen based on their excellence in basic or applied research, distinguished accomplishments in teaching or education, or demonstrated leadership or managerial excellence in the chemical sciences. A ceremony to honor recipients of this award will be held during the IUPAC World Chemistry Congress in Paris, France.

Distinguished Professor Susan Taylor Appointed Innaugural Chancellor Distinguished Professorship
Distinguished Professor Susan Taylor has just been informed by Dean Boggs that she has been appointed as the inaugural Chancellor Distinguished Professorship (II) by Chancellor Khosla.
