Drs. Stacey Brydges and Christina Johnson given 2008-09 Faculty Appreciation Awards
Drs. Stacey Brydges and Christina Johnson were given 2008-09 Faculty Appreciation Awards by the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS). The awards recognize their significant contributions to the education of UCSD undergraduate students. Nominations were made by the OASIS student staff of mentors and tutors. Certificates were presented at a gathering on June 5, 2009.

Navtej Toor joins our biochemistry division in the fall of 2009. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Toor earned his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences with a specialization in RNA biochemistry in 2004 from the University of Calgary.

Francesco Paesani joins our physical chemistry division as an assistant professor in the fall of 2009. He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Utah. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical physical chemistry from the University of Rome in 2000.

Timothy H. Bertram joins our physical chemistry division as an assistant professor in the fall of 2009. He is currently a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington. He received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006.

Students win 2009 NSF Fellowships
Five students from the UCSD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry have won 2009 NSF Graduate Fellowships; graduate students Liezel Labios, Candace Seu (inorganic chemistry), Melissa Wong (life sciences, virology) and seniors Jonathan Gable (biophysical chemistry) and Margaret Yandell (analytical chemistry) who are mentored by Professors Josh Figueroa, Cliff Kubiak, Leor Weinberger, Judy Kim, and Kim Prather, respectively. 950 awards are being given nationally. https://www.fastlane-beta.nsf.gov/grfp/AwardeeList.do?method=loadAwardeeList

Leor Weinberger awarded a Young Innovator IDEA Award
Dr. Leor Weinberger has been awarded a Young Innovator IDEA Award from the California HIV/AIDS Research Program (CHRP). The award is for $160,000 over two years.

Distinguished Professor Wolynes awarded Hirschfelder Prize in Theoretical Chemistry
Distinguished Professor Peter Wolynes has been awarded the 2009-10 Hirschfelder Prize in Theoretical Chemistry. This annual prize was established in 1991 and brings a cash award of $15,000. As part of this prestigious award, Professor Wolynes will give three scientific lectures at the University of Wisconsin, Madison this fall.
