Petitions: For information on requesting exceptions to University deadlines and policies (such as late adds, late/retroactive withdrawals with or without a ‘W’, change of grading options, receiving course credit from a different university, etc.), please visit the link provided here. Please note that exceptions to published university deadlines and policies are typically granted only in extenuating circumstances beyond your control (e.g., computer error, hospitalization). Supporting documentation is usually required as part of a complete petition.
Waitlists: If a class you wish to add is full, you can join the WebReg waitlist during your appointment time (waitlisting is available only during second pass). Waitlist placement operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so ensure you enroll during your appointment time. An automated program will move students off the WebReg waitlists and into classes as seats become available. This process runs nightly through the end of the second week of the quarter (summer deadlines differ). You will receive an automated message to your @UCSD email if you are added to the class via waitlist. Further information about waitlists can be found here.
Late Adds: Late add requests are reviewed and approved only until Friday of week 3. They require instructor approval and are considered only in sections with available seats. Requests for late adds past week 3 will be reviewed only in cases involving extenuating circumstances (such as accidental drops, approved section changes, etc.), and they require instructor and vice-chair review.
W Grades: As of Spring 2008, Academic Senate Regulation 500(F)(C) stipulates that students may receive a maximum of one "W" per course. If repeating a lecture course with a previous "W", drop by Friday of Week 4 or complete the course. For chemistry labs with a prior "W", drop before the end of the 2nd lab meeting.
D Grades: "D" grades are passing, granting units for the course. Note: Chemistry majors are limited to one "D" grade in upper-division coursework for graduation.
P/NP vs. Letter Grade: All major-required coursework, both lower and upper division, including non-Chemistry and Biochemistry Department courses, must be taken for a letter grade, except for courses without a letter grade option (e.g., Special Studies).
Repeating a Class: Courses with "D" or "F" grades can be repeated. Visit the Special Enrollment website for information on how to repeat a class and eligibility. For a third retake, contact your college for approval.
Major GPA: Chemistry and Biochemistry majors must maintain a minimum major GPA of 2.0. Majors below this threshold will not graduate.
48 Upper-Division Major Requirement: All majors in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department must complete a minimum of 48 upper-division units within the major at UCSD. It is the student's responsibility to ensure they meet this residency requirement, especially for those planning to take major upper-division coursework at another institution (e.g., via Study Abroad).
Department Residency: Chemistry/Biochemistry majors are required to complete at least six (6) upper-division courses within the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. Students must ensure they meet this residency requirement, especially if planning to take major upper-division coursework elsewhere (e.g., via Study Abroad).
Regular Academic Year (Fall, Winter, Spring): Please note that special deadlines may apply for Summer Session courses. Visit the Summer Session website for more information.
Add/Drop Deadline: The deadline to add or drop a CHEM lab course without receiving a "W" grade is before the end of the second scheduled lab meeting. For MW labs, this means dropping before the completion of the FIRST Wednesday lab, and for TTh labs, dropping before the FIRST Thursday lab is completed. Students who drop a lab course before the end of the second lab meeting are eligible for a refund of the charged lab fee, with refunds automatically processed by Student Business Services. Waitlists for chemistry labs close by the end of the second lab meeting, and no further additions will be made from the waitlist after this time. The deadline to drop a CHEM lab course with a "W" grade is Friday of 6th Week. For more information on "W" grades, please refer to: Senate Manual - Regulation 501
Attendance: Attendance at the first lab meeting is mandatory, with no exceptions. Please check the individual class schedules for first-day information. Students who miss the first 30 minutes of the first lab meeting of the quarter will be administratively dropped from the course. Ensure you come prepared with necessary materials: textbook, lab notebook, knee-length lab coat, closed shoes, and goggles.
Lab Safety Education and Safety Exam: For essential information regarding lab safety education and the safety exam, please visit: Lab Safety Information
